Voluma® is a dermal filler made by Allergan® to increase the volume of the cheeks – hence the name Voluma®. It is part of the Juvederm® family and was approved by the FDA in 2013.
How Does It Work?
Like many other dermal fillers, Voluma® is made from hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in the human body. All fillers use a process of chemical modification called cross linking that keeps the body from immediately breaking down the filler, stabilizes molecules and provides thickness.
This product has a proprietary form called “Vycross” cross linking that increases the thickness and malleability of the filler. Vycross also makes the filler less hydrophilic, so it draws in less water from the surrounding tissues and thus reduces swelling or bloating. Voluma® fills in space, so the skin doesn’t sag.
This injectable is administered as an outpatient procedure. An anesthetic called lidocaine is one of the ingredients in Voluma®. This helps to reduce any discomfort the patient might feel. The injection process usually takes only about 15 to 30 minutes.
The effects of Voluma® are immediate and last longer than do those of many other fillers – up to two years. This has been clinically proven. Many patients find they need less of the injectable during subsequent treatments than their first.
Clients can typically resume their normal activities immediately after treatment. They can reduce the chances of swelling by avoiding certain medications and supplements, like aspirin or fish oil, before treatment.
Who is a Good Candidate for Voluma®?
Voluma® was made for patients who are over 21 years old, and it is designed to plump up cheeks. Unlike other dermal fillers, it is not a wrinkle treatment and should not be used as such.
The best candidates for this injectable are people in good overall health with realistic expectations for what the treatment can do. People who have injuries, skin infections, rashes or the like on the treatment site should wait for their condition to clear up before getting these injections.
