Dark Circles Under Eyes

There can be many reasons for dark circles under eyes. Our doctor can offer a diagnosis and treatment options on how to get rid of dark circles under eyes, including laser therapy for dark circles under the eyes, during a consultation in our Annapolis area medical spa.

treat dark circles under eyes

For many patients, dark circles have become more noticeable as they age, the likely result of a loss of fat beneath sensitive skin that is also thinning. Among other factors, heredity can play a role in the appearance of dark circles beneath the eyes or in the eyelid area.

Our doctor will thoroughly examine your skin and make appropriate treatment recommendations, sometimes combined with professional skincare that will enhance and prolong your results.

Laser Therapy Treatment to Get Rid of  Dark Circles Under Eyes

Dr. Pacheco has specialized training as an Oculoplastic surgeon and offers blepharoplasty (located near Baltimore) when appropriate to get rid of dark circles under eyes that are the result of sagging, puffy skin around the eyes.

In many cases, dermal fillers are an effective solution, either alone or in combination with surgical options, for reducing the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. Dermal fillers can stimulate the production of collagen and boost moisture in the skin that is thinning and becoming drier with age and lifestyle habits.

Treating the sagging of cheeks beneath the eyes can also provide results that get rid of dark circles under eyes as well as plumping the cheeks and restoring a more youthful profile. For more extensive treatments, our professionals also offer eye laser surgery for cosmetic or reconstructive treatments.

Treatment options can include:

  • Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery
  • Juvederm®
  • Restylane®
  • Voluma™
  • Professional skin care

Although many people think that laser treatment is the best solution for dark circles under the eyes, we recommend three excellent alternatives for many of our patients: medical-grade lightening creams, tear trough fillers, and Thermage FLX.

Each option is either minimally invasive or completely non-invasive, and they all require minimal or no recovery time.

Medical-Grade Lightening Creams to Diminish Dark Under-Eye Circles

One effective solution for dark under-eye circles and puffiness is medical-grade lightening cream. Adoro Medical Spa carries multiple lines of prescription and medical-grade skin care products. These creams offer a simple, non-invasive alternative to laser procedures.

You can find many of our skin care products on the Adoro Medical Spa Shop page. We offer a huge selection of skin care products that can brighten skin, rejuvenate the eye area, protect and nourish the skin, and more.

Skin care creams that firm, smooth, hydrate, and brighten the skin around the eyes are some of our most popular products, and it’s easy to see why. They’re ideal for use with all skin types, even sensitive skin. Medical-grade lightening creams are full of powerful anti-aging ingredients, and best of all, they work.

To understand how the creams we carry can help reduce dark circles, it helps to understand how these circles can appear in the first place.

How Do Dark Circles Under the Eyes Appear?

There are generally three main causes of long-term under-eye darkness and puffiness. These are:

  • Genetics
  • Long-term sun exposure
  • Age

If more than one person in your family has dark under-eye circles, there may be a genetic cause for them. This is especially true if you’ve had dark circles throughout most (or all) of your life.

Long-term sun exposure can prompt your body to produce melanin, which is what gives everyone’s skin a certain color. The skin under the eyes is extremely sensitive, so if it isn’t protected, it can easily suffer from increased melanin and appear to be bruised and much darker than the surrounding skin.

Age is the third big culprit that causes dark under-eye circles. Throughout a person’s life, the body naturally produces elastin and collagen, which keeps the skin supple and able to “bounce back” after being pulled or stretched.

However, with age, the body slowly decreases its production of these two helpful substances. With less collagen and elastin, the skin begins to wrinkle, become loose, and sag.

The loss of these substances also causes the skin to become thinner, revealing the tiny blood vessels underneath it. The blood vessels present themselves as purple or dark “circles” under the eyes.

How Can Lightening Creams Help?

One of the main ways that our medical-grade eye creams can help is by moisturizing the skin, helping to plump it back up while restoring some of its volume. The prescription lightening creams that we carry contain beneficial ingredients like glycolic acid, other natural acids, vitamin C, antioxidants, retinoid products, and hydroquinone.

Some creams can inhibit melanocytes, which create melanin. As melanin production is reduced under the eyes, the skin can appear brighter. These ingredients have been shown to be effective for many people who want to improve the appearance of their under-eye skin.

Tear Trough/Under-Eye Fillers to Treat Dark Eye Circles

Many excellent products that we carry contain hyaluronic acid, which your body uses to plump the skin under the eyes, thereby reducing the appearance of dark circles.

Two of the most popular under-eye fillers we carry at Adoro Medical Spa are hyaluronic acid fillers: Juvéderm and Restylane.

Juvéderm and Restylane

Juvéderm and Restylane are both known to be effective at filling out the area under the eyes, which smooths the skin and provides more cushion between superficial blood vessels and the skin.

These under-eye fillers reduce the dark, purplish appearance and shadows in the tear trough area that are cast under the eyes. With their patented technology, thousands of Juvéderm and Restylane tear trough filler treatments have been performed across the U.S. with stellar results.

Under-eye fillers can restore lost volume, which lifts and smooths the tear trough area. Patients are able to reduce the appearance of fatigue , and the results are long-lasting and natural-looking.

Many patients enjoy results that are immediately visible after just one treatment session.

Thermage FLX for Under-Eye Dark Circle Treatment

Thermage FLX is a non-invasive treatment that uses radiofrequency therapy to tighten and smooth skin, including the skin under the eyes. This technology heats the layers of skin that are rich in collagen while cooling the skin’s surface, keeping the patient comfortable throughout the process.

With the heating element, Thermage FLX boosts the rate at which the body produces collagen in the skin under the eyes. In addition, the treatment also separates fibrous collagen from water molecules that surround it, resulting in immediate skin tightening and contraction.

The increased production of collagen continues for up to six months, which means the results get better over time after treatment. Total results, however, can last for one to two years, depending on different factors.

Many patients see results they love after just one session and return to us regularly to maintain their results. Thermage FLX is recommended by doctors to be used as a part of an annual skin rejuvenation maintenance program.

In addition, there is no downtime or recovery time required, since the treatment is non-invasive.
