Liposuction had previously been known as a difficult and invasive procedure that involved plenty of recovery time and even more physical stress. Thanks to a revolutionary procedure known as Liposonix®, some of the old assumptions about liposuction are being erased. Now liposuction can be as easy as a simple visit to the doctor’s office with no cuts, scars, or missed work time. Liposonix® is approved by the FDA, and has been since 2011, as a treatment to reduce fat from the waist, buttocks and thighs.
Instead of actually suctioning fat out of the body, Liposonix® uses ultrasonic waves to accomplish the same purpose. The waves apply heat the fat cells to the point where they overheat and melt away. This spares a patient the need to undergo an actual surgical procedure.
Treatment process
To obtain the Liposonix® procedure, a patient first consults with a doctor who will determine if they are a suitable candidate for the procedure. Liposonix® is suitable for those who have at least one inch of waistline or flank to lose. The procedure works best when a patient is not too far from their ideal weight. Specifically, patients with a BMI under 30 are the most suitable candidates for this procedure.
For the actual procedure, the patient visits the dermatologist or a medical spa. The procedure usually takes around an hour to administer. The doctor uses a specialized cart, similar to the process that would be followed if the patient were receiving an ultrasound. These ultrasound waves are placed in contact with the areas that have fat that needs to be burned. The ultrasound waves reach under the surface of the skin to target the fat cells. The procedure applies the energy evenly to the impacted area, leaving uniform results and avoiding a lumpy appearance.
The patient is able to return to work immediately because this is a non-invasive procedure that does not involve anesthesia. Patients will usually see results appear between two and three months after the procedure. Generally, one treatment is enough to achieve the desired result, although sometimes patients may opt for a second treatment if more fat removal is necessary. The fat that disappears as a result of Liposonix® treatment does not return. This is because, instead of reducing the fat cells that can come back later, Liposonix® permanently destroys them.
Liposonix® is not an alternative to dieting, but rather should be used in conjunction with a healthy diet. Many patients use the Liposonix® procedure as the beginning of their weight loss process. The satisfaction gained from marginally reducing the waistline may inspire patients to diet and make further changes that will increase their weight loss.
