Using light energy to rejuvenate the facial skin is becoming more and more popular. Intense pulsed light (IPL) and broadband light (BBL) are two very similar treatment methods. A photofacial is not the same thing as laser therapy. Lasers ablate the epidermal layer a little at a time, and the body responds by creating a new, healthier skin surface. Less invasive is IPL/BBL photorejuvenation therapy.
A photofacial targets specific tissues that lie beneath the surface. The treatment can therefore address such problems as acne and injury scars, age spots, and more. This is accomplished without the need for skin ablation. The epidermal layer itself isn’t affected by the treatment. Below, we outline this popular cosmetic fix in more detail.
Performing IPL/BBL Photorejuvenation
After we consult with the client, we structure a series of treatments spaced out over a period of a month or so. We calibrate the device based on the tone of the imperfection, say a bit of scar tissue or an age spot. We then place the instrument on the skin surface and flash the lamp. Each flash, or ultrapulse, lasts only about two milliseconds. After several energy bursts, we move the instrument to the next area of concern. We can recalibrate the instrument to target different tones, meaning that we can address multiple concerns during the same treatment.
The body responds to this absorption of energy by discarding the damaged cells and replacing them. After a series of treatments, small areas of hyperpigmentation become less and less visible. This treatment method is much preferred by dermatologists because the targeted tissues can be effectively damaged without the lighter skin being affected by the light energy. No skin is ablated, and the client can return to normal activities without delay. There’s no special at-home care required.
