Light therapy is becoming more and more popular as a skin rejuvenating treatment. It does not involve surgery, nor does it require any sort of abrasive skin resurfacing or skin ablation. Some people confuse intense pulsed light – abbreviated as IPL – with laser therapy. An IPL photorejuvenation treatment is performed using a special device that delivers a multitude of wavelengths, whereas a laser is monochromatic in nature. Our clients choose IPL photorejuvenation because it is safe, targets only certain cells with a specific density and color tone and doesn’t result in damage to the adjacent tissues. Most often, this treatment is performed to even out skin tone, minimize the appearance of hyperpigmentation and age spots and create healthier overall skin cells.
Who is a Candidate for IPL?
IPL photorejuvenation is effective on all skin types, so it’s not just for individuals with extremely light skin. Because it targets cells with specific pigmentation, it can be used to heat up and affect damaged cells that are causing darkened areas on the face. Age marks, freckles and moderate acne scarring can be treated using IPL therapy.
How the Procedure Works
During treatment, the instrument is placed next to the skin and the lamp is flashed for a few milliseconds. Depending on the area to be treated, the device is calibrated to deliver light energy in only a specified range of the visible spectrum. In this way, we can target cells that are of a certain density and tone.
The light penetrates through the upper dermal layers without heating them up. Instead, it is absorbed by the targeted tissue. The tissue is affected and the tiny capillaries are constricted. The affected cells are eventually flushed from the body with other waste. The body responds by sending nutrients to the treated area. New tissue growth is healthier, and collagen production increases.
A typical procedure that treats a small region of the face can be completed in less than one hour. In most cases, treatment using an IPL device is staged, meaning that a series of multiple sessions are scheduled.
Preparation and Recovery
Our clients need not begin any sort of extensive preparation regimen leading up to the treatment. Staying out of the sun is advised because excess tanning can make it more difficult for the device to be calibrated properly. After treatment, we may prescribe or recommend a specific ointment or gel to be used during the healing process. Normal activities can be resumed immediately after treatment.
