The most common type of eyelid surgery is the eye lift or blepharoplasty, which is a cosmetic procedure in which the surgeon removes excess skin, fat, and/or muscle. The surgeon may work on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Blepharoplasty can also have functional applications if the patient’s skin is sagging to the point that it interferes with their vision.
What Does Eyelid Surgery Involve?
Eyelid surgery is performed by an oculoplastic surgeon, which is a plastic surgeon who specializes in working on the eyes and neighboring areas. At Adoro Medical Spa, Dr. Pacheco specializes in eyelid surgery. It can be done on its own or in conjunction with another procedure.
What is the Recovery Like?
The patient will have to rest at home for the first few days after the procedure. Their eyes will tire more quickly than usual, so they should not spend a lot of time working on the computer. Similarly, they should not drive until Dr. Pacheco says they can. Even after getting permission to drive, the patient should limit themselves to short trips. Most patients can return to work about 10 to 14 days after their eyelid surgery. With proper care and good health habits, the results of a blepharoplasty can last the rest of the patient’s life.
Who is a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?
The ideal candidate will be a healthy patient with realistic expectations. Patients who smoke should quit a few weeks before the procedure, for tobacco can increase the risks of bleeding and complications during the surgery or the recovery. People who take blood-thinners or who have bleeding disorders are not good candidates. People who have conditions that impair their ability to heal are not good candidates. People with serious eye conditions are also not good candidates.
If you are unhappy with the way your eyelids appear for any reason, whether it be functional or purely cosmetic, you are a good candidate for eyelid surgery. Impaired vision or a tired appearance can have a negative impact on a person’s life, which is why Dr. Pacheco specializes in eyelid surgery.
