Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is a treatment that corrects saggy and puffy eyelids. These eyelids can make you look older or more tired than you are. In some cases, eyelids droop so much they interfere with the person’s vision.
Eyelid Surgery Consultation
As with any elective surgery, you’ll first have a consultation with the plastic surgeon. They’ll take your medical history and make sure that you’re a good candidate for the procedure. A good candidate is a person who’s in overall good health and doesn’t have such conditions as an overactive thyroid, glaucoma or some other type of eye condition, high blood pressure or diabetes. The doctor asks if you’ve ever had surgery around your eyes or if you take medications. They’ll also tell you what to expect and what to do before and after your blepharoplasty. For example, you may have to give up certain medications for a while and stop smoking. You should arrange for someone to take you home after the surgery.
What Happens During Eyelid Surgery
The surgery can be performed on both your upper and lower eyelid and takes between one and three hours. Openings are usually made at the natural creases of the eyelid, so scars are hard to see. When the openings are made, the surgeon removes excess fat and skin. The openings are then sealed and the surgery concluded.
Eyelid Surgery Recovery
You will need to take care when you get home to make sure that your recovery goes smoothly. Make sure you rest your eyes frequently over the first few weeks after your surgery. It’s also helpful to sleep with your head elevated, and avoid activities that send blood to your head, including bending over or lifting heavy objects. It will be a few weeks before you see the bright, alert look that comes after eyelid surgery.
