Are You a Candidate for Reconstructive Eyelid Surgery?

Reconstructive Eyelid Surgery

Reconstructive eyelid surgery becomes necessary when the appearance or function of the eyelid is abnormal. This can result from a birth defect, a medical condition — such as cancer — or an injury. This is different than cosmetic surgery, which is performed to create a more appealing aesthetic. The only way to be certain if you are a good candidate for reconstructive eyelid surgery is to consult with a qualified surgeon to determine if your condition can be corrected through surgery.

The Conditions Most Commonly Requiring Reconstructive Eyelid Surgery

Two of the most common conditions requiring reconstructive eyelid surgery are an eyelid that has turned in (Entropion) and an eyelid that has turned out (Ectropion). To correct either condition, the eyelid must be returned to the correct position. When the lashes or lower eyelids turn inward, it is called Entropion. This causes blurry vision, tearing and irritation. This can result from weak eyelid muscles caused by inflammation, age, tumors, injury of rubbing. The symptoms include chronic infections and irritation of the eye. The most common cause of this condition are weak muscles in the eyelid. This can also result from an injury and Bell’s palsy. Both conditions can be corrected by tightening the muscles of the eyelid and the tendons attached. This restores function by repositioning the eyelid.

Another common issue is a tear in the eye’s drainage system. Dry eye is the most frequent cause. The eye requires consistent moisture. When the moisture is insufficient, the brain instructs the tear gland to make more tears. The response of the gland is not well controlled. The eye’s natural system for drainage is often flooded, causing an excess of tears often running down the face or welling within the eyes. Another cause is a blockage in the drainage duct for the tears. When there is a blockage in the drainage system, the tears are unable to leave the eye and run down the face. The only way to diagnose tearing is with specialized testing and a thorough examination.

If you believe you may require reconstructive eyelid surgery, you can learn more about your candidacy as well as the options you have available by reaching out to the educated staff at Adoro Medical Spa. We also offer cosmetic eyelid surgery for those looking for an aesthetic solution rather than a functional one. We are conveniently located in Severna Park, and we also serve residents in Annapolis and Columbia. Contact us today to schedule your eyelid surgery consultation!
